Land and agriculture

The castle’s grounds have always been an integral part of Schloss Hohenkammer. The property got its name from a woodland that was called the “Eichet” because of its many oak trees. The outbuildings of the Eichethof (Oak Estate) were located next to the castle until 1982. They were then moved, and now form the centre of the estate, which includes 300 hectares of farmland and 500 hectares of forest.

Sustainably successful

Eichethof is run today as a strictly organic farm. Thanks to its director Helmut Steber’s outstanding work, it was designated by the Federal Department of Trade and Industry’s “Ökoland Offensive” as an exemplary company.

The farm is dedicated to the production of organic seed, which is then used by other organic agricultural enterprises. There is also a turkey farm. It is populated by “Bronze” turkeys, a sturdy breed that is reared free-range and fed organically, unlike most other highly-bred races.

Premium cooking oils and fine spirits are the estate’s other high quality products, including brandies made from apples, plums and quinces, all harvested from the orchard’s 1,000 fruit trees.

So, is the principle of sustainability actually worthwhile? Without a doubt! Gut Eichethof is sustainably successful.

Driven by energy

Eichethof’s energy consumption has nothing to hide. 250 kw of biogas are produced on site and 250 kw are pumped into the power supply. A block heat and power plant supplies the property with all its heating needs. We primarily use woodchips from our own forests to meet these energy demands. A two-kilometre long pipe leads from the plant to the castle, making the entire complex independent of external energy supplies.

Eichethof lies in “Naturland”

The estate belongs to a network of organic farms called Naturland®. Integrated thinking and biological and sustainable production is the group’s common objective.
